Arbetsbeskrivning

Join us at the Division of Environmental Systems Analysis, Department of Environmental and Energy Sciences, to work with life cycle assessment (LCA) to guide food industry towards sustainability. About us  At the division of Environmental Systems Analysis, we perform research to find more sustainable technology solutions and ways to transform technological systems to meet the environmental and resource constraints faced by society. Our work is challenge-driven with a systems-based approach and requires interdisciplinary efforts, which is reflected in our team's composition spanning engineering, natural and social sciences.   About the research project   Work will initially be performed within the BIOPOM (Biotechnological upcycling of fruit pomace into prebiotic food ingredients) FutureFoodS project. The project aims at reducing waste in food industry while creating high-value, health-promoting ingredients. Apple pomace is a by-product of apple juice and cider production (20% of apple wet mass and 4 Mt/y of waste in Europe) and BIOPOM aims to use it to generate food ingredients that possess an untapped prebiotic potential in an interdisciplinary approach combining precision fermentation, metabolomics, and colloidal science. The project also aims at validation of safety and sustainability across the entire life cycle. BIOPOM's multidisciplinary consortium comprises experts in biochemistry and biotechnology, metabolomics, life cycle assessment, food safety, and regulations on novel foods. Industry partners provide apple pomace and are important in scaling technologies for stabilization and in the pre-industrial integration into food matrices.  The work of the Doctoral student will have a large focus on using life cycle assessment (including development of methods and practices) for providing guidance in technology development. The work will be done in close collaboration with other project participants. Who we are looking for The following requirements are mandatory: • To qualify as a Doctoral student, you must have a Master's degree (masterexamen) of 120 credits or a Master’s degree (magisterexamen) of 60 credits* in chemical engineering, biotechnology, industrial ecology or similar • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English • Experience of life cycle assessment • Strong interpersonal skills and a sincere will to collaborate *for students with an education earned outside of Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor’s degree is accepted.  The following experience is meritorious to your application:  • Having used life cycle assessment in a project, e.g. a master thesis • Courses in chemical engineering or process engineering What you will do • Take courses at an advanced level within the Graduate school of Energy, Environment and Systems (Energy, Environment and Systems | Chalmers)  • Develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing  • The position also includes teaching in the courses at the division or performing other duties corresponding to 20 percent of working hours • Carry out life cycle assessments and related work; the first three years this is done in the context of the BIOPOM project Contract terms   • The Doctoral student positions are fully funded from start.  • The position is a fixed-term appointment of four years, with the possibility to teach up to 20%, which extends the position up to five years.  • A starting salary of 34,550 SEK per month (valid from May 25, 2025).  • Doctoral studies require physical presence throughout the entire study period.
